Sunday, August 25th, 2019

Through a statement released by the Serbian Tennis Federation, the team's captain Nenad Zimonjic announced today that the current world number one, Novak Djokovic, will lead his country in the Davis Cup by Rakuten Madrid Finals held from November 18 to 24.

Nenad Zimonjic: “Novak will play the final tournament in  Madrid. I had the chance to speak with him in New York, a day before  the last Grand Slam competition in season 2019 US Open start. Novak confirmed that he will join the Serbian Davis cup team in Madrid, it  will be a great reinforcements for us, all of us are looking forward to participate in this new format of Davis cup competition”. “I am very glad that after along absence  Novak will join the team, that definitely will be a huge gain for our team, as Novak also said that he is looking forward to join and play for Serbia Davis cup team” he added.

Serbia, who won their first and only Davis Cup title in 2010, will begin their campaign in the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid by taking part in the Group Stage, where they were drawn in Group A with France - winners in 2017 and 2018 finalists - and Japan. Serbia will debut against Japan in the morning session of Wednesday 20 November and will play on Thursday 21, also in the morning session, against France.

A total of six groups - each one comprising three countries - will take part in this part of the competition. The winners of each group and the two second best will qualify for the quarter-finals.

Serbia gained their access to the Davis Cup by Rakuten Madrid Finals 2019 thanks to their victory over Uzbekistan in the Qualifiers last February.

Serbia hold the historical record that the former Yugoslavia accumulated in the Davis Cup. They competed for the first time alone in 2007 (they debuted in 1995 as Yugoslavia, a denomination they held until 2003 to subsequently do so as Serbia and Montenegro). Djokovic and the current captain Zimonjic, then a player, were part of the team that won the title in 2010.
