Italy and USA meet in the Davis Cup by Rakuten quarter-finals on 24 November. In the Group Stage, USA captain Mardy Fish had to miss out due to Covid-19, but this time he'll be looking to go toe to toe with Filippo Volandri.
Captain: Filippo Volandri
As a player, Volandri reached a career-high ranking of No.25 in 2007 and finished his playing career with two ATP titles. He made his Davis Cup debut in 2001 and played 10 ties for his country, including a World Group playoff in 2006 against Spain.
In January 2021, Volandri took over the captaincy from Corrado Barazzuti, the man who had selected him for his first match in the competition twenty years earlier. In his first Davis Cup as captain, Volandri took his side to the Finals, steering the team to the top of their group and into the quarter-finals where they were beaten by eventual runners-up Croatia.
Captain: Mardy Fish
Mardy Fish made his Davis Cup debut as a player in 2002, playing in 11 ties before his last match in 2012, where he teamed up with Mike Bryan to defeat Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka in the USA’s 5-0 victory over Switzerland.
He reached a career-high ranking of doubles world no.14 in 2009 and world no.7 in singles in 2011, retiring as a player in 2015 with six ATP titles as well as an Olympic silver medal from Athens 2004.
He took over the Davis Cup captaincy in 2019, although had to miss out on the Group Stage in 2022 due to Covid-19. Bob Bryan stepped in as captain.
